Prayer at Church
Wed, Sep 24 | 7:45p-9:00pm | Hall of Truth, 204
"St. Augustine wrote that before anyone can turn to the question of what to pray and how to pray it, they must first be a particular kind of person. What kind is that? He writes: “You must account yourself ‘desolate’ in this world, however great the prosperity of your lot may be.” He argues that no matter how great your earthly circumstances they cannot bring us the peace, happiness, and consolation that are found in Christ. The scales must fall from our eyes and we must see that—if we don’t all our prayers will go wrong." Tim Keller.

Two Seminars. One Opportunity: “Hermeneutics & Homosexuality” and “Are People Born Gay?”
Sat, Aug 23 | 2:00-5:00pm | Praise Center
What does the Bible actually say and mean on the issue of homosexuality? Hermeneutics is the interpretation of texts, and "Hermeneutics & Homosexuality" is a seminar from Christopher Yuan that will examine what Scripture accurately says on homosexuality. The second seminar offering considers the issue of whether people are born gay, and therefore, God created them this way. These two seminars will equip us to have a better understanding of our Bible and our God. Given the cultural context in which we live, you should not miss this opportunity to become knowledgable on these topics.
Christopher Yuan | While attending dental school, Christopher began living promiscuously as a homosexual and experimenting with illicit drugs. Within a few years, he was expelled from dental school, imprisoned for drug dealing, and diagnosed as HIV positive. But God has turned his life into an exciting and inspiring story of redemption, grace and transformation. Christopher has an understanding heart for and a desire to minister to those working through issues of sexuality and to those living with HIV/AIDS. He speaks locally and internationally to youth, on college campuses, in churches and prisons.

"A Christian community either lives by the intercessory prayers of its members for one another, or the community will be destroyed. I can no longer condemn or hate other Christians for whom I pray, no matter how much trouble they cause me. In intercessory prayer the face that may have been strange and intolerable to me is transformed into the face of one for whom Christ died, the face of a pardoned sinner. That is a blessed discovery for the Christian who is beginning to offer intercessory prayer for others. As far as we are concerned, there is no dislike, no personal tension, no disunity or strife that cannot be overcome by intercessory prayer. Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual and the community must enter every day." Dietrich Bonhoeffer

A Big "Thank You" for Big Sunday!
I hope many of you were able to participate in Big Sunday last month. It was a time for us to be missional in our local communities. I joined the college Thailand Team at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in City Terrace, where we cleaned up a campus garden so it could be used. Other volunteer groups cleaned classrooms and painted. Working beside us were Rachel & Mark and Eric & Karena's Sunday School Classes—a real surprise to find out other FCBCers were there. About a week ago, I received a BIG "Thank You" card made by some students from RFK. Well done, FCBC!

YA.COMMUNICATION | MAY 26, 2014

Memorial Day
Mon, May 26, 2014
As our country celebrates the Memorial Holiday, let us remember and give thanks to God for service men and women who gave their lives so this country could continue and live in the privileges we have. We should also extend prayers to family, friends and co-workers who in recent years have lost people because of this service. May God's comfort, peace and strength bring recovery and renewal upon them.

Mark 10:45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Christ is The Rescuer for all humanity, who gave his life so all could really live and have eternal life.
For the various reasons one may join the military, I don't believe any service person joins for the sole purpose of dying. None set out to die. They recognize the inherent danger of military work and combat, and know that death is possible, but none say his or her intention is to die. Christ came to earth to die. That was his intention in coming. In obedience to the Father, Christ knew his death was required, and no other ransom was sufficient or comparable to save man from God's wrath and to reconcile with God. In the helplessness of man, Jesus became the ultimate Servant.
Looking to Jesus as our example, we should "die for others" (Jn 15:12-14, 1 Jn 3:16) and become a servant to all. Not an easy task, to say the least, but placing humanity above personal survival, personal gain and personal comfort was what Jesus did. "He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Phil 2:8). Dying for others is lowering ourselves to uplift and benefit them. It may cost a little. It may cost a lot.
But who shall we serve? Well, everyone. The expectation upon us—in obedience to God the Father—is to have the same regard for others as Jesus did for us. Jesus also died for the Jewish priests, pharisees, scribes that persecuted him and the Romans guards that killed him. For the strangers who need help, for the bosses who are jerks, for the rude neighborsthey're the ones we're also to serve, not just the people we like. As American soldiers died in service for anonymous citizens, God wants us to serve those who he brings into our presence, know them or not, like them or not. That's being like Jesus. That's loving like Jesus.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO MOMS!
I hope you felt loved and appreciated on this special day. For most of the moms in our department, you're still just starting out as a mother, but we recognize the time, energy, love and commitment it takes to be a wife, raise a child, work and handle other responsibilities. May God's grace, which is sufficient, find you daily.
